A woodcut by Albrecht Dürer of a rhinoceros. Dürer never set eyes on a rhinoceros and instead based this rendering on a written account. He captures many details correctly, but mistakenly thinks the animal has plates similar to those of a tortoise instead of thick skin. (ROSENWALD COLLECTION, NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, WASHINGTON DC)

Dürer’s rhinoceros print was among those he brought along to the Netherlands, where he gave them to Margaret of Austria, Charles V’s aunt, who successfully interceded on his behalf. Dürer was able to return to the parsimonious Nuremberg magistrates with an imperial writ instructing them to pay out the required sum.
